Born in Harlem in 1927, Harry Belafonte served in the Navy during WWII before returning home and starting his music career. He became one of the best-known calypso/folk artists in the world, playing the guitar and drums in addition to his legendary vocals. He was active in music from 1949 until 2003 before retiring.

He has won three Grammys as well as an Emmy and a Tony for his acting. Belafonte also received the Kennedy Center Honors, the National Medal of Arts, and a Berklee College doctorate. He currently devotes his time to activism as a UNICEF Ambassador.
