Dennis Franz is a retired actor. After he graduated from Southern Illinois University, he was drafted into the Army. He served with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions over in Vietnam. His tour of duty lasted eleven months. In 1978, he became an actor. He is best known for his role as Detective Sipowicz in NYPD Blue, an ABC series that aired from 1993 until 2005.

He won a Golden Globe, four Emmys, and three SAG Awards for his role in the show. After the show went off the air, he decided to retire alongside his spouse, Joanie Zeck, who he married in 1995.
