Actor Gene Hackman joined the Marines at age sixteen, lying about his age to get into the military. He served in the Marines for nearly five years, and he was stationed in China, Japan, and Hawaii. After his discharge, he moved to New York. He started acting in the 1960s, which was something he’d wanted to do since he was ten.
His role in the 1967 movie Bonnie & Clyde skyrocketed him to fame, as he was awarded an Oscar nomination for his role. He won an Oscar for The French Connection just four years later, one of two he has won.
