Bernice Frankel, who is more famous today by her stage name, Bea Arthur, served one of her most important roles before she ever made it to television. Frankel served in the U.S. Marines. She joined at a time where very few women were enlisting in the military, making Arthur an anomaly.

Arthur achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant during WWII. She would later be honorably discharged after two and a half years spent in the War (specifically, she served from 1942-1944). Later, she would become famous for her stand-up comedy and TV shows such as Golden Girls and Maude.
