Johnny Carson was another comedian who served in the military. Carson, before he would become nationally famous for his show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served, starting on June 8, 1943. He received his V-12 Navy Training at Columbia University, followed by Millsaps College.

After his training was up, he was given the job of communications officer during WWII. He was trained to decode encrypted messages from the Germans, passing along the information to higher-ups. Carson was also an apprentice seaman with the V-5 program, a different Navy organization, before joining V-12.
