Oscar-winner Charlton Heston has appeared in various military-related roles, including Ben Hur and Spartacus. The actor may have been drawing on real-life in those movies, as Heston served in the Air Force, where he spent two years as a radio operator on the B-25 Mitchell medium bomber.
He also was an aerial gunner on the bomber. Heston and his platoonmates were stationed in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. They were members of the 77th Bombardment Squad. Heston would later go on to achieve the rank of Staff Sergeant before receiving an honorable discharge, ending his service.
