Jerry Garcia is the lead singer and guitarist of the band The Grateful Dead. As fans of the band know, Garcia is somewhat of a rebel. He had this rebellious streak even when he was serving in the U.S. Army. Garcia smuggled his guitar into basic training at Fort Ord.

He went AWOL multiple times and received a dishonorable discharge on December 14, 1960, after having served just nine months (several of which he spent Absent Without Leave). He never enlisted in the military voluntarily. His mother enlisted him after he stole her car as a way to punish him.
