Richard Pryor was awarded the NAACP Military Service Award in 2006. He served in the U.S. Army, but he spent most of the two years of his service locked up in a military prison in West Germany. Apparently, the incident centered around a movie screening of Imitation of Life, a 1959 Douglas Sirk movie.

A white soldier laughed a little too hard at the scenes of anti-Blackness on the screen during the movie, and Pryor didn’t take too kindly to that. A racially-charged brawl ensued, and Pryor was the one put in jail, even though it appeared that the white soldier started it.
