Buster Keaton may have been just 5’5”, but that didn’t stop him from joining the U.S. Army. Apparently, when the quartermaster general allowed him into the Army, it was a shock to him that someone that short would be allowed to serve in the military (this was before women were allowed into combat).

Keaton served from 1918 until 1919. He was a member of the U.S. Army’s American Expeditionary Forces, which operated in France. Keaton had already begun acting before he was drafted at age twenty. He’d completed two twelve-reel comedies before being notified that he would have to put his career on hold.
