Actor Art Carney was drafted during WWII into to the US Army. He landed at Normandy in 1944, and he was awarded a Purple Heart for his bravery in combat. He was a machine gun crewman and infantryman. Carney reached the rank of Private. He was injured at Normandy and sent to a hospital in the English Midlands.
After the war, Carney would go on to have a successful acting career. Carney played Ed Norton in The Honeymooners, opposite Jackie Gleason. He later had a role on Gleason’s show. He won an Oscar for Best Actor for Harry and Tonto.
