Kris was born on June 22, 1936, in Brownsville, Texas. After graduation, he joined the army in 1960. His music career started after he moved to Nashville and left the military. While in Nashville, Kris worked as a service expert and a helicopter pilot at Columbia Studios.

He resigned from a teaching position at West Point to fulfill his dream of becoming a songwriter. Kris also gained victory as an actor. He played a small part in The Last Film (1971). After that, Kris played his first notable role in the film Cisco Pike (1972). He made over 50 films.
